Letter from Eric Ericson
Dear friends of choral music!
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the website of the Eric Ericson Masterclass.
This biannual masterclass for young choral conductors bears my name.
Let me explain to you the reason for this.
For many years I have been a regular guest in Holland. This tiny country by the sea is home to two of the best professional choirs in the world, the Netherlands Chamber Choir and the Netherlands Radio Choir. I have conducted the Netherlands Chamber Choir on many occasions for more than 20 years, in a wide range of repertoire. I have also met the Netherlands Radio Choir more than once. Each choir has a characteristic sound and repertoire: the Chamber Choir performs mainly a cappella music, old and new, while the Radio Choir specialises in large symphonic works.
Both choirs recognise that the standard they have been able to set as professional vocal ensembles, under my guidance and that of other conductors, should be allowed to grow and prosper, and should be passed on to the next generation of young choral conductors.
Our agreement on this point has inspired these two ensembles to create the Eric Ericson Masterclass for young choral conductors. I am honoured that these choirs have chosen my name to represent the continuance of this tradition, and that conductors of international reputation have agreed to succeed me in giving the Masterclass.
For you, the Masterclass is an opportunity to work at the highest level, to take a further step in your career as a conductor, and to derive deep inspiration for your musical life.
I cordially invite you to take part, either during the coming Masterclass or at some later date.
